Keynote on background
Dijkhuis’ first journal article on ball lightning appeared in Nature in 1980, as noted in the Science Watch column of the New York Times.
Two successive public share issues in 1983 and 1986 funded Convectron's activities for validating the scientific model.
Two daring test programs were pursued: first with a submarine propulsion battery in Rotterdam Waalhaven, resulting in fireball generation recorded on high-speed film; subsequently at the KEMA High-Power Laboratory in Arnhem, The Netherlands, under high-voltage breakdown conditions in rapid gas flow mixed with fuel for the fusion process.
Measurements at KEMA indicated presence of fusion reactions, but experiments were cancelled when funds ran out before confirmation of initial results.
Meanwhile the model has gained further rigour and broadened its scientific basis. These facts motivate fresh efforts for demonstrating a small-scale fusion reactor as viable technology.
